Heavy-duty vehicle electrification is essential to support Pennsylvania’s transition to modern transportation. Wireless charging offers significant advantages for fleet applications by eliminating cables and connectors, reducing maintenance, and enabling flexible, on-route charging. However, existing wireless charging systems face challenges related to efficiency, scalability, and cost at the high-power levels required for heavy-duty vehicles.
This project develops a modular, high-efficiency power conversion approach that enables scalable wireless charging for fleet applications. By combining multiple compact modules, the proposed approach improves reliability, simplifies expansion, and supports charging power levels suitable for buses, trucks, and port equipment. The work builds on prior experimental results and focuses on translating laboratory advances into deployment-ready solutions.
The project is carried out in collaboration with a PA-based company, ensuring strong industry relevance and accelerating technology transfer. Expected outcomes include improved efficiency, reduced complexity, and enhanced readiness for real-world deployment. The project also provides hands-on training opportunities for students, supporting workforce development in Pennsylvania’s energy and transportation sectors.
